What’s wrong with our normal sugar that we bought at stores to begin with. First, regular table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup don’t contain any vital nutrients and therefore supply “empty” calories. Added sugar is unhealthy because it causes a significant rise in blood sugar levels. It’s also nutrient poor, providing virtually no vitamins or minerals. The harmful effects of added sugar are becoming more evident day by day.
That is why more and more people are turning to natural alternatives – coconut sugar. This sugar is derived from coconut palm tree and is more nutritious and low on the glycemic index than sugar.
Another name for coconut sugar is also called coconut palm sugar. It is made in a natural 2-step process:
- A cut is made on the flower of the coconut palm and the liquid sap is collected.
- The sap is placed under heat until most of the water evaporate.
The end product is brown an granulated. The colour is similar to raw sugar – brownish but the particle size is a bit smaller.
Coconut sugar however do contain a bit of nutrients found in coconut palm. Notably, the minerals iron, zinc, calcium and potassium, along with some polyphenols and antioxidants. It also contains a fiber called inulin, which cause slow glucose absorption. This explains the slow glucose absorption and explain why coconut sugar has low glycemic index than regular sugar.
That being said, use coconut sugar in moderation. Too much of everything is not good even if it’s healthy for you.
